First it was Sony’s announcement that they’d be phasing out discs for their games completely, and then it was their doubling down on this straight from an out-of-touch suit, saying something along the lines of, “This is what gamers want.” Because nobody knows the thoughts and feelings of regular people more than executives who do nothing for the development of platforms for gaming aside from sit around and collect profits. And now it’s Rockstar, instead of advertising their next game like a normal company, they’re “releasing” footage on Netflix, i.e., an ad you have to pay for.

Someone at Rockstar’s boardroom said, “We can get people to pay for ingame currency. That’s no problem. We can even get them to pay egregious prices for our games, and weapon skins, and everything in-between (I’m assuming this is the route they’ll likely take in Grand Theft Auto 6)! But … what if we made people pay for an ad!”

Every day that you think the world can’t become any more dystopian than it already is, you are wrong. You are always wrong.

It’s never been more obvious that the rich and the CEOs view all of us as cattle. Cattle who have wallets, and every one of them is in a race to see just how much they can exploit you for your dollar, until people finally become so pissed off that they actually do something that’s in their best interests. Like, not paying for Netflix one time just to watch an ad for a videogame.

Don’t tell me, “Everyone has a Netflix subscription, anyway!”

I don’t. I don’t rent my shows and movies for streaming. I just buy them.

A decade ago I might have been interested in a sixth Grand Theft Auto. A decade later I’m running Linux, which Rockstar views as a cheater’s platform, so I’m already inclined to keep my digital car thievery in the past.

I don’t even really feel all that angry writing this, though. I think I’ve been angry at so many bad things in the past decade that it’s more just kind of like, “What stupid ass thing are the elite doing now?”

And then I find out, and then I sigh. Maybe fard and shid my pants a little. And then the next bad thing happens, and it’s always just a little bit more of a slightly larger increment of the concept of “worse,” as if all of society is inching by centimeters closer and closer to the event horizon of a massive black hole.

Sometimes I wish it’d just swallow us already.
