Fediverse Tips & More

This page is for new or newer Fediverse users, especially people starting on Mastodon desktop and wondering why the setup feels different from corporate social platforms.

In light of 2024/2025 moderation chaos across major platforms, this is my practical onboarding guide from direct experience.

This is focused on desktop first. Once your account is configured, mobile login is easy.

1) How Do I Choose A Server?

Start with joinmastodon.org. Their list is curated and excludes instances that do not meet certain reliability standards.

For broader context, also check the Join ActivityPub page here.

  • You do not need a hyper-niche instance to get started.
  • If an instance has no clear rules against harassment/bigotry/nazism, skip it.
  • Some instances approve instantly; others manually review signups.

If an instance is run by one person or has limited backup resources, it may not appear on joinmastodon's curated list.

2) “Posting Requires Setup”

Yes, there is a basic setup pass. It only takes a few minutes and dramatically improves your experience.

  1. Open your profile menu, then Edit profile.
  2. Set display name, avatar, and bio.
  3. Review Privacy and reach, Verification, and Featured hashtags.
  4. Go through preferences and filters.
  5. Return to timeline and post.

Filters are especially useful for removing topics you do not want in your feed.

Do not expect instant massive follower counts. The Fediverse grows through real interaction and network effects over time.

3) What If I Picked The Wrong Instance?

Instance migration is much easier than it used to be. You can move follows/followers and import key account data.

Quick Migration Flow

  1. Create your new account on the target instance first.
  2. On the new account, add an alias pointing to your old account.
  3. On the old account, open account migration and point it to your new handle.
  4. Confirm and move followers.

Moving Extra Data

On the old account: Import and export → Export (bookmarks, blocks, mutes, follows, etc).

On the new account: Import and export → Import and upload the CSV files.

Moving followers is a committed action. Double-check handles and password before confirming.

Posts usually do not migrate fully across instances. Keep local backups for anything you care about.

4) Practical Mindset For ActivityPub

Mastodon and ActivityPub are not outrage-optimized algorithm machines. There is no engagement farm feeding you rage for ad revenue.

Use it socially: follow people, talk to people, reply to people you are not following yet, and build communities intentionally.

If you want guaranteed permanence, keep your own archives and maintain your own website presence. Owning your data matters.
