my favorite thing is people arguing about whether the Backrooms should have monsters or not. on one hand, you have a game like POOLS where there is no monster, at least not one that you can see, and the entire game is terrifying, regardless. although, I think it’s debatable that there’s “not a monster” and I tend to think the entire game is an allegory for trauma in response to abuse.

in the theaters, though? I don’t know that most could sit and watch a character walk through an eerie landscape of empty architecture without something that’s actively threatening to their well-being
