Bluesky Took More Money From Crypto Investors: Should You Join the Fediverse?Follow me via: Firstly, yes, last year Bluesky took more investment money from yet another crypto company named, “Bain Capitol Crypto,” and as outlined in another post, they’ve also switched leadership to a temporary venture capitalist. For all intents and purposes, these are signs of the opposite of an open protocol, and the open internet. Especially seeing as, this is exactly the kind of thing that brought down Twitter, and what Bluesky’s original mission intended it to be against (a billionaire takeover). If you’re following the link to this post from the app formerly known as Twitter: Hello. Via MEXC.
Now, I’ve been hollering on and on and on and on for at least a couple of years now, on this blog, about how you should join the Fediverse. You should join because it’s open, there are many servers to choose from. You can take your account everywhere (moving posts is being worked on), and so on and so forth. But, the Fediverse doesn’t come without its problems. There are a lot of instances (servers) erected by fascists whose only intent is to spread misinformation and hate (much like the same types currently do on X, the one letter app), and most Fediverse servers block them out. But you can’t just play Russian Roulette and hope you land on a server that blocks this filth, you have to read rules and guidelines. I’ve seen for myself, directly on the Fediverse, people joining servers, and then getting pissed that there are a bunch of Nazis everywhere … because they didn’t look at the landing page of the instance they’re on, and take notice to the fact that the server had no rules. A lot of the issues with joining Fedi and using it are user created problems. And reading is something more and more people just do not do in 2026 and on-ward. Problems that aren’t user created, though … Firstly, some servers are fine, and some are run by megalomaniacs who wish they were kings and queens. And even those servers can be okay … if you don’t ruffle feathers. Not-for-nothing, but I ruffle feathers. I’ve told trolls to go fuck themselves and eat shit. This has gotten me banned from instances like cybre.space, hackers.town (now masto.hackers.town), kitty.town, and so on (this is an oversimplification, but all of the bannings I’ve been dealt across the Fediverse were unjustified and egregious). These admins will setup no-nonsense rules that make sense, but they’ll run the place as though nobody has any stake in maintaining a social presence, and zap you into nothing, for nothing. And then they’ll go about their day, as if they didn’t potentially kill your only avenue of social and monetary support. You should, at all costs, at least try to avoid servers with admins who are like this. Can I recommend servers that aren’t run by jerks and prima donnas? The mainline mastodon.social server is fine, and so is mastodon.online. Social.lol is also, pretty cool, (but you have to buy a domain from them in order to participate in their instance). Social.vivaldi.net is a server hosted by the people who develop the Vivaldi browser and has never had any major drama surrounding it. My own instance, gts.mkultra.social, is open to new users, but it’s GoToSocial, and it requires using an app, or the front-end I have setup in order to interface with it, and it is not beginner friendly, at all. You can view an exhaustive, really huge list of servers, here (I believe this excludes servers that don’t make daily backups or servers that have less than three moderators). But, that aside, the Fediverse doesn’t come without its issues, and there are even more that I haven’t gone over, that I don’t feel like going over (because a lot of it has to do with personal grievances that aren’t 100% relevant to this post), but, is it really all that different from Bluesky? Sure, yeah. I run my own server and I’m not being funded by right wing crypto investors. I also run my own PDS, but that PDS is connected to, and still subject to moderation policies of the far right platform that the main Bluesky server is becoming. You don’t have blocklists and starter packs, but blocking and muting does exist, and you can still create lists and bookmarks on most instances. I’m writing this, though, because I’ve seen people say things lately, like, “Uh oh, better go register an account on Mastodon!” And, sure, you should! But you should be aware that it’s not perfect on the Fediverse, either. And that, like all of social media in this post-2020 world, you have to do your due diligence, or you may as well delete everything and stay on the singer formerly known as the app formerly known as the social media site formerly known as Twitter. Not everyone has your best interests in mind, in fact, most strangers aren’t even aware that you have interests, and don’t think about your wellbeing. So you should make sure that you, do.
